Oh Canada

Here are the things we did while studying Canada. 
  • Map the migration to tie in to Canada/USA connections. 
  • Watch Flight of the Butterflies documentary 
  • Map flight of the generations of monarchs 
  • Studied monarchs further in various insect books 
  • Read: The Butterfly Garden 
This was great to show Relation of Canada USA and Mexico. 


The Christmas and Dance at Grandpas Chapters of Little House in the Big Woods and the Spring chapter of Birchbark House both talk of maple syrup harvest and maple sugar. This was perfect timing to tie in with learning about Canada.  
CG Season 6 episode 7 is Maple Madness but we don't have Hulu and it's not on Netflix anymore. 
  • "Snow" in water table 
  • Build igloos with marshmallows 

  • Watch YouTube video about Niagara Falls (This was the military base stop in Fly Away Home, also in flat Stanley)
  • Animal copywork worksheets 
  • Northern lights documentary/video
  • Baked maple cupcakes with maple frosting. 
Book tie in: Inuit study (inuits helps Flat Stanley) video on Amazon Prime about Inuit

  • Splinters (a Cinderella type story of a girl with a dream to play on a real hockey team. Not specific to Canada, actual location isn't mentioned. 
Maple: a book about a girl named after a maple tree who gets a sister.

So we planned North America out so that we could be studying Mexico during Dia De Los Muertos  Some of the books we used:   Elena's Serenade This is a book about a girl who is told she cannot become a glass blower, so we also found some videos of glass blowing in Mexico on YouTube.  Grandmothers Song The Tooth Fairy Meets El Raton Perez Nino's Mask  Tortillitas para Mamá and Other Nursery Rhymes (Bilingual Edition in Spanish and English) Uncle Monarch and The Day of the Dead This pairs nicely with the Flight of the Butterfly documentary we watched when we learned about Canada: We also made a day of the dead altar craft from a book we got from the library and watched  Book of Life    while we ate some take-out Mexican food.  For another craft, we found paper flowers plans in a multicultural craft book I had: Basically we just raided the tissue paper gift wrap stash and cut blobbly circles from various color

Pirates!

 When I saw the bonus lesson in A River of Voices by Blossom and Root for the Golden Age of Piracy, I got excited!  We decided to spend a good few weeks reading pirate books, watching pirate movies and documentaries and doing some pirate crafts.  I decided to keep us in pirate mood, I would decorate our kids craft shelves on theme.  We had the pirate treasure chest and Jake Pirate toy. The Lego Pirate ship was something my husband had put together. We added a globe, some treasure (mardi gras beads, and some old casino chips we had) and some sea shells. I made pirate word cards  (free printable PDF) and bought the flag bunting for an added touch. So our kid pirates can trade dubloons for shells or jewels, or just compare weights of our treasures we added a balance scale .  The main book that we used was Who Was Blackbeard   and we used the unit study from Waldock Way that goes with it and  Pirates by John Matthews   This was a wealth of knowledge and we spent a lot of time looking

Spring: Flower Unit Study

 The plan was to transition from Pirates straight into a spring and Easter theme, but that took a bit longer than planned so we decided Spring is still happening so we got to it.  I decorated our kids craft shelf again to brighten up the entire house (its a loft so this is the center of one side) Under the window are some flower lights I had bought a yard sale forever ago. The wreath at the top of the window I made long ago and blogged about on my home blog  I started a hundred years ago when I thought I could be a great daily blogger.  I bought these plastic flower pots from the Dollar Tree (6/$1) not sure what I would do with them because they are very flimsy then got the idea to showcase the different parts of a flower, dissecting a couple different silk flowers (also from the DT).
