Got to see a crawdad in our creek this afternoon!  So we read Crawdad Creek and watched YouTube videos about Crawdads and learned that to catch them, you need to put your net or bucket behind them, wave a stick in the front of them, because they scuttle backwards when they are retreating. 

To go along with our Story Of The World activities, we got History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations:  Which is not pockets, but actually a book of worksheets and activities that you can copy for each kid and add to your own pockets. It is designed to make 7 work sample pockets with pocket labels and content for each. Each pocket has a wordpicture/definition page to color pictures, write the definition and cut the pictures and words for matching. I love that it is a great expansion to other activities, but not enough as a stand alone for these topics

On a nature walk along our property we found this opossum skull. Then a long time later when Penny was napping, Ellie decided to do some lab work on it  and took some notes. Then she watched some YouTube videos about opossums. We learned that the opossum is the only marsupial native to North America, they are immune to snake venom, and have like lots and lots of tiny babies because many do not make it to the pouch. When we went to the West Coast Game Park Safari , we got to meet a real live young opossum! Expansion ideas: Look for tracks, compare with our own. Locate Virginia on a map. As a saver of all things potentially useful I decided I really should use the old valentine chocolates boxes I had collected over the years. Magnets came to mind and I decided a valentine themed magnet letter activity would be fun for my girls. (The magnet letter and popsicle stick idea is something I saw somewhere on the interwebs.) Step 1 Save random advertising magnets over the years (or pull one from your fridge) (or buy a sheet of them) (or buy a sheet of valentine magnets from dollar tree and use the edges between the shapes) Step 2 Write whatever words or names you want on popsicle sticks. Step 3 Cut magnets into strips and glue to the back of each. Step 4 Then just fish through the refrigerator magnets for the letters needed for your words (I decided to take out unused letters to save space and make it easier to find the letters needed.
